David Pittman, LMFT

My belief is that we all have times in our lives when life itself has lost its joy and is overwhelming. We are sad and overwhelmed with family struggles or are just stuck in a rut at work. I choose this field because therapy helps people find their ways to the lives they want for themselves and their families. Practicing in this field is where the focus and aim are helping the "whole person, couples, and families" in their world and life.

I supervise because it is part of the giving back and paying it forward, but another purpose or reason I do supervision is to build upon the academic foundation that each trainee already has when he or she begins supervision. Academics is the classroom foundation, and supervision is the “field training” where trainees get to be hands-on. Supervision must be a safe place for trainees to explore ideas, to question what they are doing, to take risks, and to report mistakes, trusting that the supervisor will continue to help him or her grow as a competent therapist and protect the well-being of the client.

The things I hope for the new professionals by the end of training include but are not limited to the following: how did they handle any legal or ethical issues that arose, documentation of sessions and special circumstances, how do they handle contextual factors, do they use and how do they use any professional research/resources/training in their sessions. At the end of supervision, I hope they are excited to go forth and make an impact in people's lives.

WORDS I LIVE BY:
"We cannot choose the things that will happen to us. But we can choose the attitude we will take toward anything that happens. Success or failure depends on your attitude." - Alfred Armand Montapert
