John Souza, Jr., MA, LMFT, DMFT

Seeing people as part of a system made more sense to me than solely learning how to work with individuals out of context. Besides, working with families and couples always reminds me to be a better husband and father!

I provide supervision because I LOVE working with families and couples (individuals don't come to therapy; culture, context, and relationships come to therapy), and I LOVE helping others learn to love working with families and couples. Basically, I supervise for love.

I hope to infect others with the MFT bug. If you don't love MFT now, you will when we're done! And if you don't love it, you'll at least have a greater appreciation for it! But seriously, my aim is to encourage people to see people in the context of their relationships, as in multiple people in the same room: That is true MFT.

WORDS I LIVE BY:
  • Individuals don't come to therapy; we are constituted by our relationships.
  • Paradox and change are absolutes.
  • People make more sense in context.
  • We're all adapting to the best of our abilities.
  • We’re all trying to differentiate (to the best of our abilities).
  • Sometimes, the above ideas fascinate me; other times, I'm intimidated.
  • The aim of therapy is to generate hope and encourage congruence about the ongoing process of adapting and differentiating.
