Makungu Akinyela, Ph.D., LMFT

I chose to be a therapist because, as a young social activist, I saw the ability to help people engage and navigate their personal and community conflicts in ways that are liberating as an important aspect of being a social change advocate.

I supervise because I believe it is important for those of us who have gained knowledge and skill to collaborate with those who are new to the field to ensure that our clients are respected, honored, and supported in their work for health. I also want to provide mentorship to those who don’t often find a friendly face in the profession.

I hope that new professionals will be reminded of and become excited about the art of therapy. I hope that they will develop a sense of curiosity about themselves and their own lives and how this intersects with the lives of the people they work with.
