Sheila Addison, Ph.D., LMFT

I went into the MFT field knowing I was interested in people who wanted to seek change in their lives and their world. I was drawn to working with those who experienced stigma and discrimination, such as queer and transgender people, and learning more about social justice developed my interest in ending all kinds of oppression via my mental health and community work. Helping clients heal their intimate and family relationships has been so satisfying; I feel very fortunate to be able to do work that supports love and closeness on a daily basis.

The most important part of my development as a therapist was receiving high-quality supervision from senior clinicians who helped me develop my skills at assessment, conceptualization, and intervention. As hard as it can be to show your "weak spots" to a supervisor, every time I took a risk and said, "I don't know what to do here," it helped build my knowledge and confidence, and it helped me to serve my clients more effectively. As a supervisor, I'm honored by the vulnerability supervisees share with me, and I value the chance to help them grow and, by extension, help their clients as well.

I hope new professionals will stay open to the process of life-long learning and the satisfaction of having the confidence in your work that it develops.
