I chose a career in this field because I have experienced trauma in my life as well as mental health issues. I feel this makes me a more empathetic counselor and better able to help others in their suffering as I have walked where they are currently. I wanted to give back. When I was going through depression in my 20s, I had my therapist at the time tell me that she had struggled with depression and had overcome it. This gave me hope that I, too, would make it through. I believe the more we can relate to our clients, the better therapists we are. I am not saying that I share with clients that I have gone through depression, but I am better able to connect with them and help them verbalize what/how they feel. This, in turn, helps them feel understood as well as helping them on the road to recovery.

I had a difficult time finding someone to supervise me, so I want to be available to supervise others and make the process less difficult than it already is. Additionally, I did not know exactly what I was doing in regards to the steps I needed to take to become licensed, and I would like to help others navigate this process. I also believe in giving back, and supervision is one way I can do this.

I hope that new professionals desire to make a difference in the lives of others in healthy ways (i.e., having appropriate boundaries, utilizing ACA Code of Ethics, using evidence-based practices, meeting the clients where they are at, etc.). I hope they are able to develop empathetic relationships with their clients that allow the client to feel unconditional positive regard from that therapist. I hope new professionals can learn to establish healthy boundaries for themselves so they do not experience compassion fatigue or burn out. Overall, I hope new professionals can find appropriate meaning and satisfaction from the work that they choose to do.
