“Systems thinking is my heart and marriage and family therapy and clinical supervision are my passion.”

Chris Sand-Ashley is an IMFT-S, LPCC-S and AAMFT-Approved Supervisor in Ohio, where she runs and operates her private practice, Chrysalis Counseling Center, Inc

Three Decades & Counting

A social worker and therapist with over 30 years of experience, Chris can trace her desire to help back to high school. “It’s funny, but I remember telling my family and my high school counselor that I wanted to be a social worker since I was 16. I have always felt that being in the helping profession is my purpose.”

Chris’ professional experience has spanned both decades and work settings. She spent the early years of her career with Cincinnati’s Children Protective Services and Catholic Social Services. Once she earned her master’s, she worked at a hospital-based in-patient rehab unit for chemically dependent/alcoholic adolescents. There, she worked to develop an intensive out-patient program for chemically dependent/alcoholic adults. Later, she was recruited to become a Clinical Director at Personal and Family Counseling in New Philadelphia, OH. While there, she managed to maintain one night of private practice work as well.

Chris founded her own private practice in 1994 and continues to work there today. She focuses her work on couples, families, and chemical dependence. Her practice has had staying power, as well as growth. “We now have 12 clinicians with multiple specialties,” she says. “I think it’s a pretty special place!”

For the Love of Supervision

Not only is Chris a seasoned supervisor, she has also honed her skills as an educator, most recently holding a position teaching practicum students at the University of Akron.

Perhaps more important than her (impressive) resume, however, is the passion she has maintained for her work over the years. Her enthusiasm for marriage and family therapy comes, in part, from “the power of the family system to enhance or sabotage the individual’s progress and wellness.”

As a supervisor, Chris can go deep and get meta. “Not only do I love clinical supervision but supervision of supervision as well.” It is this drive that prompted her to give online supervision a try through Motivo. “I love the concept and I am so impressed by the professionalism and creativity of the company that I want to be an active part of it!”

Chris’ philosophy is to look at supervision as an empowering process. “I consider the isomorphic nature of the supervisory relationship as well,” she says. “That is, the less experienced the clinician, the more directive I may be. When I first meet with a potential supervisee, we discuss a contract of sorts which clarifies expectations and goals of the supervisee.”

Embracing New Tech

With such an extensive background in in-person supervision, Chris has been surprised by the ease of adapting to online meetings. “I can say that the online supervision has been an excellent experience,” she says. “I was wondering if it would feel impersonal to do online supervision but it hasn’t at all so far. So I encourage people to try it and with Motivo’s support, it is user-friendly.”
