What Is Motivo And How Does It Work For Tele-Supervision?

Motivo online clinical supervision telehealth therapy

When CEO & Founder Rachel McCrickard started Motivo, her mission was personal. She was earning her hours to become an LMFT, starting in California and finishing in Georgia, and in both states, she struggled to find quality supervision within a reasonable driving time.

Necessity is the mother of invention and it was hard to ignore the voice that said, “There has to be a better way,” especially during her two-hour commutes in the car.

When Rachel learned that many states had begun allowing supervision hours to be collected online, through secure video-conference, she saw a path forward that could be better for mental health professionals, and the people they serve.

The timing seemed right to utilize the advancements that have been made in video technology in the past five years. Internet connections are stronger, more stable and more ubiquitous than ever before and with the rise in the use of video-based technology, specifically in the field of telehealth and tele-mental health, we as humans are experiencing how real connection can be made online. This means that the feeling of being in the same room with the supervisor is now a (virtual) reality, even when you’re miles apart. One big difference to note between traditional consumer video platforms and Motivo are the requirements put in place to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA-compliance.

Additionally, and maybe most importantly, the research is here to support it. Studies like this one and this one have revealed that the quality of video supervision is comparable to in-person supervision.

And so Motivo, a HIPAA-compliant online marketplace connecting pre-licensed therapists with clinical supervisors, was born.

At Motivo, our driving force is supporting the licensed and pre-licensed mental health professionals who bring it to life. We want to make sure you are getting all the benefits that online supervision has to offer and so we’ve rounded up a few of the most commonly asked questions to help you join our community and get started.

I’m a pre-licensed clinician looking for a supervisor! How do I start?

Finding a Supervisor is the place to start your journey into online supervision. Through our site, you will answer a few questions about your licensure type, when you need to begin supervision, and the state you are working to be licensed in. This will populate all of the available supervisors in your area who are a potential fit.

Every supervisor offers a free 30-minute consultation, so you can ask questions and meet online to see if you would be a good match. We’ve even prepared this list of questions to ask your supervisor to help you make the best choice.

We believe strongly in helping people find the supervisor that is right for them and our pool of supervisors is purposely diverse—ranging in everything from specialty, preferred modality, gender, race, to sexual orientation. Inclusivity is everything, especially in mental health.

You can meet with as many supervisors as you’d like to find the one you think will work best for you!

I’m a supervisor looking for a supervisee! How do I start?

Tele-supervision not only makes life easier for pre-licensed candidates, it’s a business opportunity and growth edge for licensed professionals as well. We’re here to support you as you grow and evolve in your career and step into the world of telemental health, giving you more flexibility and access to wider pools of supervisees across your state (or even internationally!)

Once you have filled out our step-by-step profile and gone “live” in our directory, there are some steps you can take to help your profile stand-out. We’ve compiled a list of data-driven tips that help you connect with supervisees.

Be prepared to engage in some initial consultations and know the times you have available to meet. Much like a therapy client going through an intake process and deciding on a recurring weekly session time, you will do this with your supervisee as well.

Motivo’s platform has all the tools incorporated for scheduling supervision sessions, storing notes, screen sharing resources and facilitating paperwork. We’ve worked to accommodate every scenario we can think of to make it a seamless, one-stop shop.

It’s a match! How do we get started?

Once you have matched with a supervisor, we will send you a link to set up your payment information. All session payments will be processed by Motivo at the end of the session. Once you have added your payment information, your supervisor will reach out to you to schedule your first session.

Simply follow the link that the supervisor sends to you. You and your supervisor will schedule recurring sessions as desired. The supervisor will schedule each session and provide you with a link each time.

Any other questions about getting started with Motivo? Don’t hesitate to ask! Mary Sue is on-hand to help at marysue@wearemotivo.com or submit this form to get started.
